Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to our most frequently asked questions and learn how to get the most out of Skynet's global telescope network.
- What is Skynet?
- Skynet is a global observing network that allows users to schedule and conduct observations, access data processing tools, and collaborate with researchers worldwide.
- Who can use Skynet?
- Skynet is open to anyone with an interest in astronomy — from students and citizen scientists to professional researchers. All new users get a First Light account with starter credits.
- What is a First Light account?
- A First Light account is provided to new users with a small pool of initial credits. Skynet may add extra credits based on your observation activity and telescope availability, so you can keep exploring the cosmos.
- How do I request telescope time?
- Once you have an account, choose a telescope within your available credits or organization-provided resources and submit an observation request. Skynet automatically schedules observations and delivers the data to your account.
- How do I get more credits if I run out?
- If you run out of credits, you have a few options: join or contact an organization with available telescope time, or request an external subaccount from a participating organization. In the future, Skynet may also introduce a paid subscription plan for extra credits.
- What are organization accounts and external subaccounts?
- Organizations can grant telescope access to users by assigning them an internal organization account (observations belong to the organization). Alternatively, they can create an external subaccount which the user fully owns. Observations made through external subaccounts remain under the user’s ownership.
- What kind of telescopes does Skynet have?
- Our network includes optical and radio telescopes of various apertures, located across multiple continents to enable continuous and diverse observation capabilities. As the network grows and evolves, we plan to add more telescopes and instrument types.
- Is there a membership fee?
- Currently, Skynet offers First Light accounts at no cost. In the future, Skynet may offer paid subscription options that provide additional credits and help support ongoing telescope maintenance and services.
- How do I access my data?
- Once an observation completes, the raw data and preliminary analysis files will be available in your account portal. If you used an organization account, your data is also accessible to other members of that organization.
- How can I contribute to Skynet?
- You can contribute by volunteering your telescope to the network, helping with software development, making a donation, or participating in outreach programs. Your support ensures Skynet continues to foster discovery for everyone.
